The Camberwell Beauty Butterfly, Mourning Cloak Butterfly
The Camberwell Beauty Butterfly Botanical illustration
Gouache and Polychromos pencil drawing of the Camberwell Beauty Butterfly, or for American friends also known as a Mourning Cloak butterfly!
The Aurelian by Moses Harris, published in 1766, gives this butterfly the name "The Grand Surprise" or "Camberwell Beauty", based on 2 individuals that were caught in Cold Harbour Lane near Camberwell in 1748.
An iconic symbol of Camberwell, and as an avid butterfly watcher myself I had to add this to the collection!
